Jennifer made some nice stockings for Paola and her sisters, and filled them with cool gifts. A lot of it was Hello Kitty stuff + I added a stuffed dog that sings "Feliz Navidad" to the package. Good choices, because we now know that Paola's favorite animals are cats and dogs.

Hola, fellow group members! I'd like to introduce you to Jennifer Swisher, the daughter of my mom's work colleague. Jennifer is a high school student and animal lover. She belongs to a dance team that travels all over the country for competitions. Jennifer also enjoys working with children, and is loving her summer job as a day camp counselor.

I've recruited Jennifer to Paola's sponsor group for a very special reason. Look below the photos for her self-introduction ...

"Hello! My name is Jennifer Swisher and I will be a senior at Eastlake High School this upcoming year. To graduate from high school, it is required to complete a senior project. A senior project has to teach you something new and must take up 60+ hours of your time. I had a general idea that I wanted to help someone or do community service of some kind for my project.

I was approached with the idea of fundraising for the Children International program. I was told the story about Paola in Mexico, and the terrible poverty of her living situation, and I instantly became interested!

I plan to collect money and have various fundraisers to help Paola. A memo has been sent to the Children International office in Jalisco, Mexico, to inquire about the family's greatest needs. Paola will be starting school as soon as she obtains a copy of her birth certificate, so I am hoping to create a study/kitchen area for her family, because they currently live with four people in just one small room. I will update this fundraising page when I learn the total cost of a table, chairs, bookcase, refrigerator, and whatever else Paola's family needs the most.

Next winter, I plan to go down to Paola’s home in Guadalajara, Mexico to see the items purchased through this fundraiser and to bring her family clothes, toys, and food. I will also take Paola to the zoo, and have a fun day with her!"

My name is Mani. I was born and brought up in India. Currently I am in US (seattle) for some work assignment. I work in the IT industry. All my family live in India. I believe I will go back soon in a coupla years too :). I love solving sudoku puzzles and watching cartoons/wrestling/soccer.

Paola's Bedroom Makeover!!!!

Thanks to the generosity of this group, Paola and her sisters have their new bunk beds!!!!

I like the pretty purple sheets - a nice choice for brightening up a dark room.

In the second picture, we can see that the new beds have been placed next to the old one. I wonder if this is temporary, or if they intend to keep the old one around for Rosa (and probably Maria) to continue to sleep on. The letter states that Paola will "share the bed with her sister, Tomasa", which implies that each girl will have a bunk. I see this arrangement as being unlikely, as it's not customary for all members of a family to sleep in their own beds (I doubt Paola would want to sleep alone!). I think it's more likely that Paola and Tomasa will sleep in one bunk, while Rosa and Maria take the other. They might be planning to remove the older bed to create more space in the room, or keep it around either as a back-up or as a table (in the next set of photos, the groceries and other purchases have been piled up for display on the old bed).

I also made a Spanish book for Paola (and my other 6-year-old, Nicty) titled: "Cuando Tu Madrina Tenia Seis Anos de Edad" ("When Your Sponsor Was Six Years Old")(actually, because I don't have the right accent marks here, I think it really says "When Your Sponsor Had Six Anuses"?)

Here is the latest letter from Paola:

Dear Barbara Rogers

Paola..... thanks you a lot for the gifts that you sent, clothes, crayons, books, scholar supplies, personal hygiene items, photos, letter, etc., She is very happy to know that there are people like you, that even though they are so far from her, they love her and look over [after?] her and her family to have a better standard of living.

Paola likes to see your photos a lot and to know different places through your pictures and also your friends and family. Paola and Rosa say hi and they hope God keeps blessing you."

The field officer who wrote the above letter for Paola made an additional comment as follows:- "Paola was very happy for all the gifts and pictures [photos] from the sponsor, she loves to see the pictures and know more about her."

This shows just how much children, including Paola, really enjoy receiving personal photos and postcards from their sponsors. I also think of it being a learning experience for them.

July Visit, Part 23 - Getting Home

Hi, to all Paola's sponsors!

It is now almost the one year anniversary of my visit to see Paola in Guadalajara. I think it's time for me to conclude the story, right? Let's see what I can remember ...

On Wednesday morning, Mike and I got up before the sun rose and trotted across the street to the bus stop. It was raining hard, as we waited for the bus with Aeropuerto written across the front. There was an attractive young woman waiting there as well, under an umbrella. She got fed up and hailed herself a taxi. To us, she said, "Would you like to ride along, since I'm going to the airport, anyway?"

THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! When traveling, you should never accept taxi-sharing offers from strangers, because it could easily be a set-up for robbery or (when attractive young women are involved) seduction followed by a shakedown from a pimp.

Mike and I gratefully joined the girl, because:

a. We obviously had nothing worth stealing.

b. The girl was unlikely to put any backseat moves on Mike with me as a witness.

We had a pleasant and uneventful ride to the airport, then pitched in a little for the cab fare. First, we headed to my Delta departure gate. You may remember that I was flying on stand-by, and I already knew the low likelihood of making it onto the flight. Sure enough, I didn't.

A Delta attendant instructed me to visit the ticketing desk downstairs for a re-issue, but first I escorted my husband to his departure gate for his 7:30 flight. I kissed him good-bye, and promised to meet up with him again some day in the future.

I went to the ticketing gate with the understanding that I must wait until the early morning flight the NEXT day before I stood a chance of getting home. Surprisingly, the employee there instructed me to come back at 2pm, because there was another Delta departure that afternoon, which only operated on Wednesdays. OK, cool.

In the meantime, I took a bus back into the city (the cheap 5 peso bus). The sun had come out and the day was beautiful!!!! I got off by our old hotel, and went inside to warn them (in broken Spanish) that I may be returning to stay another night if the 2pm flight didn't work out.

One thing I hadn't gotten a chance to do was visit a Pizza Hut and take a photo for my collection. My only problem was not knowing the location of the nearest HUT ... but I knew someone who WOULD know. The day before in Wal-Mart, I had gone up to the photo counter and tried to stammer out something in Spanish to indicate that I'd like to purchase an SD card for my digital camera. The kid behind the counter gave me a puzzled look and asked, in perfect English, "Are you saying you would like to buy a memory card?" I headed down the block to the store with hope that this young man would working again, as he was the right age to like Pizza Hut + he could explain to me how to find one.

Soon, I was on a bus holding a piece of paper with my stop jotted down on it. There was the Pizza Hut, right on the corner like the kid said it would be. The restaurant wasn't open yet, but I set my camera's timer and posed in front for a few photos. I also snapped a few through the glass windows because I thought it was funny how they parked the delivery motorcycles between the tables at night. I think that was what made the guard outside the bank next door suspicious. He said something into his radio, and soon a police car cruised into the parking lot. The cop watched me for a few minutes, then shrugged and drove off.

I had more time to kill, so I tried to back to the touristy cathedral area. I got really lost and frustrated, but finally made it there. For what purpose, I'm not sure. Eventually, I walked back to the hotel where they had allowed me to leave my bag. I shared the fresh pineapple I had purchased with the receptionist.

Back to the airport. I got some nice photos of the slums outside the city through the bus window.

The mysterious Delta flight was practically empty, so I had no problem getting a seat. In fact, I had a whole bank of seats to stretch out across! This plane dumped me off in Salt Lake City, Utah. Now, I had to wait and see if I could secure space on the 6pm flight to Seattle. I began chatting with a pilot's wife who was also a stand-by passenger headed for Seattle. She had been waiting ALL DAY, but flight after flight had been too full. It looked like I might be spending the night in Utah instead of the cheaper Mexico!

Lucky for me and my new friend, all of the other stand-by passengers in line ahead of us decided to give up and go home. We both got on the plane!

I arrived in Seattle about 30 minutes ahead of Mike. He had a long layover in Mexico City (yes, I know that doesn't make geographical sense), then he had to change planes again in Los Angeles. At least he was flying First Class!

Since I was already inside SEA-TAC airport and past security, I was able to meet my husband right at his gate. "What took you so long?" I asked. Mike was totally shocked to see me, and so was my father, who thought he was only picking up one person!

All in all, it was a fun and successful trip.

Barbara and I sent a direct package to Paola for Easter. I received the following e-mail and the above pictures from Barbara

I have just received two photos of Paola's Easter DP but the two sisters don't seem to be very happy with their gifts for some reason. I thought Paola would love the big cuddly lamb but her little tight lipped smile doesn't show much pleasure. However, I do like her hairstyle!!

At least it is good to know that the parcel arrived safely.

A New Photo and a Recap of Paola's Sponsorship

Remember when, less than a year ago, the touching photo of a 'dirty' ,sad looking little girl called Paola touched the hearts of several people and 13/14? of us decided to sponsor her as a group? Shortly after, we had a quick collection to enable Macky to buy the family several useful items and food items during a very rushed visit which not only provided many interesting photos of their first visit to the zoo but also several photos showing the dreadful living conditions of the family. The photos showed a very dark, fly infested room with a dirt floor, a hole in the roof, no water connection and the worst of all the mother, Rosa, was cooking on an open fire in a hallway with three young children running about. It was immediately decided to do a group fundraiser in order to change the family's living conditions. The most urgent was to provide a safer means of cooking so once the funds were raised the family received a small table, a gas cooker and a gas canister? (the open fire is no longer used because they have an actual mini stove!)

Then, an inquiry regarding what could be done about getting the two eldest girls, Paola and her elder sister, Tomasa enrolled in school eventually led to two very generous donations, by anonymous sponsors also touched by the family's poor living conditions. More luck continued when the Mexican Government decided to provide cement floors to the small compound where Paola lives. At the same time repairs were made to the roof, a toilet and water connection was made, and a dangerous well was fenced off with a retaining wall.

Then, just before Christmas another small group fund-raiser was made to provide the family with a wardrobe in which to keep their clothes instead of being kept in boxes on the floor.

The latest photos that were posted on March 11 and can be seen here, show the new wardrobe and the socks, shoes, and flip flops bought with the remaining fund raising amount. There was also enough to start proceedings to get the children enrolled in school and provide the necessary documentation.

Soon, the two sisters will start a new adventure, that is begin school for the first time. Since Rosa is illiterate and may not have been taught any personal hygiene the children are often filthy with uncombed hair and unwashed faces. So, in order to prepare them for their new school experience four of us are doing what we can to get them ready so as not to be embarrassed when they embark on their new school life. Barbara is making up a 'preparing for school' package for practising their ABC's, exercise books and hygiene items like brushes for hair, teeth and nails, a wash cloth and towel, etc., Bernie is looking for some ABC books in Spanish and other school supplies; Mack is putting together a cartoon type 'hygiene for pre-schoolers which will be translated into Spanish by Heather. Hopefully, these items will encourage Rosa to teach her children some necessary hygiene tips so that they won't be embarrassed by other children.This will also give Paola some preschool experience so that she would be less behind than other kids who may have attended nursery or kindergarten.

So, you can see that our group has been kept busy but it is so rewarding to have been able to help this worthy family in such a short time. And, you can be sure that more will follow in due course!!

After all of this good fortune, and in less than one year's time, their family income has gone from $95 a month to $291! Wow!!

Visit, July 2009 – Tuesday Touring

Whenever I visit Mexico, I always seem to find myself at a Sandra Bullock movie. This trip was no exception.

Mike and I weren't sure what to do with ourselves on Tuesday. I had planned to go clothes shopping for Paola (after having a chance to eyeball her size), but after learning that the CI office was not accessible to drop off the packages, that idea had to be nixed.

We decided to kill the day on one of those hop-on-hop-off bus tours, which we were able to catch near the Cathedral. After examining the brochure, I saw that they offered both a Red Line and a Blue Line tour, and I was only interested in taking the longer "red" one. As Mike and I purchased our passes, we were issued red wrist bands. "Good," I thought, "we were automatically assigned to the Red tour." People were loading themselves onto a waiting bus, so we followed suite, finding seats on the open upper deck. As the tour commenced, I tried to follow along with the map in the brochure as my guide. I was confused and lost … but all became clear once I realized that we were on the BLUE tour. Whoops. The color of everybody's wrist bands was just a coincidence – the random color of the day.

After a bored and restless two hours on the Blue Line, we looped back around to the Cathedral where we were able to switch to the Red. There was a certain stop I wanted to get off at, because I knew that some geocaches were located in that area. Unfortunately, the place (Sunshine Plaza, I think it was) didn't come until near the end of the tour.

Midway through the tour, the bus stopped and the driver told us he would be taking a 15 minute break before we continued. Mike and I ducked into a mini-grocery store to buy drinks … and that is where my husband saw the sunglasses rack from Hell.
It was bright outside, so Mike wanted to shade his eyes. So, in typical obsessive-compulsive fashion, he began trying on different pairs of glasses. When he finally settled on which he liked best, he started to fret over the price and couldn't decide if the shades were really worth the investment. Of course, by the time we left the store (with the glasses) our bus was long gone.

Rather than wait 45 minutes for the next one, Mike and I walked a few blocks down to a shopping mall with a movie theater inside. The next feature showing in English happened to be "The Proposal" … starring Sandra Bullock … again. It actually wasn't so bad, as far as romantic comedies go. The theater was pretty dark, though, and Mike's sunglasses weren't all that necessary.

Eventually, we got back onto the tour bus and found both the geocaches. We also took a bunch of photos with Stanley, my traveling stuffed monkey – including one outside of the Guadalajara Zoo. I didn't want to bring him out in front of Paola and her sisters, because it's not nice to play with toys in front of children unless you're willing to give them the toys to keep.

In the continuing saga of Mike's sunglasses …

First, he forgot that he even had them.

When he found them in his backpack, one of the lenses had popped out.

As soon as he got the lens re-affixed, the sun vanished and it began to rain.

Finally, the glasses fell from where he'd hooked them to his belt, and were never seen again.

After the bus tour finished, we proceeded to … to … I don't know. That's the problem with writing blog posts eight months after the actual event - I forget stuff.

More Improvements to Paola's home!!!

Our Google Group child, Paola is so loved by all!! Last year, we wanted to set her mother up with a business to bring more income into the home. However, it was determined that a business would not be a good idea because the mother has no schooling. She doesn't know basic math nor how to read and write. Hopefully, there is a program she can get into to learn how to do those basic things at the center. For now, we had to come up with a different way to help. When CI came back with a long list of things that needed to be fixed in the family's home, our group went right to work! The family received a well for clean water, a toilet, a sink, and a new roof! Here is what the field officer wrote on their behalf.

Dear Donor,

Paola is very happy for all that you have done for her and for her family: the well, toilet, washing place, roof. All of that will improve their quality of life greatly. Paola, Tomasa, Mary, and Ms. Rosa thank you for all of the love and attention that you give them. They are happy to know that their are people who worry about those who have less, and that they do something to help them. They say hi and hope that you are fine. May God keep blessing you.

Paola's 5th birthday gifts from Barb!

Yesterday, I received a letter from Paola. It was intended for Barbara, but it, also, mentions the other 12 of us. She probably imagines that we all live in one house :o)

Here is what it said:

Paola Mendez thanks you for the letters that you send her. She likes to know you think of her. Paola likes the princess dress and also likes to color Dora. Paola also would like to meet you someday. Update on Birth Certificates

Here is the latest that Barbara's contact at CI has heard from the office in Mexico:

"So far, its pending to get the birth certificates of Paola and Tomasa, although our Field Officer has given guide and support to Paola's mom, she hasn't had the time to do what she requires to do personally. The mother has already the birth certificate, but in order to get the birth certificates of her children (Tomasa and Paola) she requires an official ID card. Next Monday, December14th, Paoloa's mom and our Field Officer will get some papers that Paola's mom requires to continue with the process of the birth certificates.

We would also like to request your authorization in order to use the $66.00 USD to build a wall to finish the construction of a well that the family has in their front yard. We haven't realized about this problem because the family had covered it with some pieces of wood. This wall would prevent accidents of anybody may fall down into the well."

The money has been authorized for the wall to be put up around the well, so all is ... wait for it ... well!

Here is the package that I sent via Steve. The girls really look excited & grateful for their life change... It must be really incredible to be in their shoes and see so much changing for the better! Next year, it will be school for both of them! In the meantime, I sent them the learning laptop that I had, also, sent to Brayan. It has eductaional games on it, so hopefully they can do some learning at home before they get a chance to start school!

These are the Christmas photos - I mailed the package via surface but obviously it was sent air mail and arrived too early, but better early than late I suppose. In fact, since Paola is wearing the same clothes and has the same hairstyle, they were given to her on the same day as the warm clothing which was sent in August!!

Here are some photos taken after Paola received a package from Barbara back in August:

These photos are of a 'warm' clothing DP that I sent in August. One picture shows Paola actually smiling, but in the others I think she is sucking on some candies I included. The contents were as follows:

2 sweat suits, 3 T-shirts, one pyjama set, 3 fleecy hoodies, 3 small bags of candies, 1 hanger, Dora colouring book and crayons, 1 pencil. The comments in the follow up letter from the CI local centre were:

Paola looked very happy and thankful for the gifts she received from Ms. Rogers.

The letter written for the family by a CI field officer read.

"Dear Barbara Rogers
Paola Mendez Aranda is very happy for the special package she got. She thanks you very much for the crayons, the pair of pants, the t-shirts, and all the other nice things you sent her. She really wants to start colouring the Dora the explorer book. Paola still does not go to school, but next year she will start kindergarten. Paola loves you very much and she thanks you for all the things you do for her. She'd like to meet you someday. Paola hopes you're doing fine. She sends you kisses and hugs."

A letter like that makes it all worth while.

Getting Paola educated!

Here is the latest news about the possibility of getting Paola and Tomasa enrolled in school. It appears that Rosa has not been able to afford this in the past, mostly because she does not have the required birth certificates for them. These are necessary before they can be enrolled in school.

Both Alice and Barbara inquired about getting the children into school as soon as possible. The reply was that, first of all, Rosa has to obtain her own birth certificate in order to apply for those for Tomasa and Paola. According to the CI Representative, in Mexico one doesn't send off to State capital like you do in the States but has to go (in person usually) to the town/city where one was born.

Since Rosa and her family have lived in the same house for 10 years it is to be hoped that the girls' certificates are in Jalisco but it is not yet known where Rosa was born. This could cause a costly problem. The CI local staff are investigating this and hopefully we will hear back in a week or so. Hopefully, if Rosa knows that there will be some available funds to help her, she will be more receptive to the work involved. There was a small amount left from the larger sum donated by the incredibly generous anonymous sponsors which can be used to help alleviate this matter. If it is not sufficient then we may have to do another small fundraiser.

In the meantime, in reply to Sissy's query as to whether we will be doing another fund-raiser to help this family with their special needs, the answer is "yes" if you will be able to contribute.

Barbara's idea is to have either a larger fundraiser to buy a wardrobe to store their clothes instead of having to have them in boxes on the floor. - cost approximately $100.00 or also to add another $175.00 in order to pay for the drain connection which will help keep their clothes clean. Perhaps, if those members of our small group who were unable to contribute towards the stove, table, gas container project that we raised earlier, could donate towards the wardrobe/chest of drawers the rest of us could start fundraising for the drain/connection? It would be wonderful if both of these could be raised before Christmas so that the floor and drain connection could be done together. Also, the storage unit will be even more necessary once they receive their Christmas gifts from those of us who will be sending Direct Packages.

If both of these could be funded this year it will only leave the larger amount of $439.00 to pay for the bathroom. This would take place sometime next year after the other projects have been funded. Please let us have your feedback and ideas so that we know what you want to do as well.

July Visit, Part 21 - Leaving Zoo/Marcela Blows Me Off

After the CIA presentation, we hurried to the zoo exit. There was a restaurant right there, so I offered to buy a late lunch for everybody. I hoped that Rosa would be hungry enough to "take the bait", but she said it was essential that she go straight home.

On second thought, Rosa was probably right to be in such a hurry. Now, I'm no expert on babies, but I'm pretty sure that when you take one out for the day you're s'posed to bring a diaper bag along. Rosa had nothing of the sort for Maria. I didn't smell anything, so I guess all was good.

During the truck ride back, everyone fell asleep (me included, briefly) except for Fernando (who was driving) and Tomasa.

Back at Paola's house, the good-bye hugs were a bit hurried. Rosa and the family needed to do something with bricks, and I'm sure Paola was ready for a nap!

I suppose to be fair, it was nearly 4pm by this time, but I felt like our day had been cut short and there was still time for more to happen. I suggested that we go somewhere and buy a take-out meal to bring back to the family. I felt guilty about not feeding them.

Marcela wasn't keen on that idea, so I didn't even ask about doing some clothes shopping for the girls at the open market outside the community center (I'll post pics of that in the next entry - I forgot them here). Of course, Marcela and the other staff still had to drive Mike and I to our hostel, then go all the way back to the main office. I don't think I knew at that time how far away the place was from us.

I had another full day left in Guadalajara, so I was hoping to work out a way to do something else CI-related. On the top of my list was a visit to Heather and/or Barbara's boys, Brayan and Miguel ... but Marcela said that would be impossible. Next, I thought maybe I could do a bit more shopping for Paola's family, then bring the gifts to the main office (like we had done in Honduras). Marcela gave me a card with the address on it - so I could MAIL gifts. She said the office was too far away for me to travel there by myself. She sort of implied that she was done with me, until my next visit to Mexico, lol.

So, Mike and I carried the gifts for Miguel and Brayan downstairs to the truck, we all hugged good-bye, and the day was over. After the CI staff left, Mike and I walked to downtown Guadalajara and ate our only restaurant meal of the trip - Chinese buffet food!

The parts of the zoo we saw are circled in black. As you can see, there is plenty of zoo left for the next sponsor who visits!

July Visit, Part 20 - The Aquario Photo

I should have written this part sooner, but the photo was lost in our messy house!

The aquarium had one of those blue screen photography stations where they will super-impose your group into an underwater scene, so I thought that would make a fun souvenir. The camera was mounted up on the ceiling, and I don't think Paola understood what was going on. In the picture, I'm asking the photographer to wait for a second so I could point the camera out to the little girls (obviously, she didn't wait). The end result is cool, however, because Paola looks a little confused and apprehensive as if she actually IS at the bottom of the ocean, surrounded by sharks.

Paola thought the photo was just great, as you can tell by her happy face when Marcela shows it to her below. I had a copy made for her mother to keep, of course, and the extended family got a laugh from it back at the casa.

At 2pm, we crossed a suspension bridge and entered a colorful building to see a "show". I assumed that this would be some sort of an educational live animal show, presented in incomprehensible Spanish. Instead, it was an educational activity area, guided by a host who spoke incomprehensible (to me) Spanish. The attraction was called "CIA - Central de Investigacion Animal".

First, we stood in an entry foyer and watched an introductory movie on large wall screen. Anyone who has visited a Disney park or Universal Studios should be familiar with this concept.

Further inside, a woman took our group of kids from one learning station to the next, teaching them about animals through hands-on activities. The adults stood around the outskirts taking photos. I had no idea what was going on, really, but maybe some of you Spanish speakers can shed some light on the matter after seeing my videos.

What I was paying attention to was the differences between our girls and the other kids in the group. Besides the fact that the others were clean and polished for a day out at the zoo, it was obvious that the other children attended school and understood how education is supposed to "work". They followed instructions and enthusiastically engaged in activities. When the lady asked a question, hands shot up and answers were shouted in response. In such an unfamiliar environment, Tomasa and Paola were completely out of their element and had a difficult time keeping up with their peers. Luckily, the hostess was good at her job and made sure to include our girls by coaxing them into the action. Tomasa soon shed her shyness and awkwardly participated in the activities, but Paola remained bewildered and reluctant throughout the entirety of the "show".

At the the very end, our confused 4-year-old brought unwanted attention upon herself by winning the game of animal bingo. She was rewarded for her victory with a credit card-type thing that was supposed to be exchanged for a prize? I asked Marcela, who told me that the card was meant to be inserted into a special ATM machine. Where and/or how??? As far as I know, Paola still has the card.

It was nearly 2pm when we exited the aquarium. I was grateful to Marcela for not taking Rosa's desire to be home early too seriously. Rosa had no way of telling the time, so Marcela must have decided that it would be good enough to let her know when it was actually 2:00, rather than have us leave at 1:15 so we could make it back to the home by that time. I wasn't about to complain!

Fortunately, Rosa had succumbed to the zoo's lure, and she agreed that we could stay long enough to see an hourly "show" that we had missed earlier in the day. We had 15 minutes before the next show time, so I asked if anybody wanted a fruity ice drink from a nearby refreshment stand. I bought drinks for Paola's family, but the CI staff all declined the offer - I'm not sure why, since sponsors are (naturally) expected to feed the reps who assist them with their visit. Maybe Marcela, Fernando, and Elsa knew that the beverages would be sickeningly sweet. I sure couldn't drink mine!

Here is something interesting to note about Paola and Tomasa: They never asked for ANYTHING. Many of the zoo attractions forced us to exit through a gift shop, and I always expected the girls to be drawn to the toys and stuffed animals ... but they didn't touch, beg for, or even LOOK at the merchandise. I don't know how long it had been since they'd last had a meal, but the kids showed no interest in the food or ice cream stands that we passed - until I offered, that is. The family definitely enjoyed their super-sweet fruit drinks.

Later, on the way out of the zoo - and past more gift shops - I asked Marcela if we shouldn't buy something for each of the girls. She told me it wasn't necessary, as we had already done so much for them. Since the kids weren't asking for anything (unlike every other child I've ever known), I took Marcela's advice and saved my money. Tomasa and Paola need to learn that the squeaky wheel gets the grease!

July Visit, Part 17 - The Aquarium

After checking out the kangaroos, our group stumbled upon the entrance to the "Aquario". We had the appropriate tickets, so we were granted admission.

I wasn't particularly excited about the aquarium myself, but after seeing how delighted Paola seemed while watching the fish, I was glad we were able to go in. First, we spent some time at the stingray petting tanks outside, then we saw all the fish housed in the building. The family was particularly impressed by the diver feeding the fish from inside the tank. I asked Marcela to explain to them that I am also a diver, and that I once dove in the shark tank at the Singapore aquarium. Judging by her fascination level, I think that Paola liked the sharks better than the smaller, more colorful fish.

A Letter from Mexico!

I still haven't finished the report from my trip, but today I received our first letter from Paola's camp (+ many, many photos!!!), so I thought I'd share it immediately.

The translation reads:

Dear Mckenzie and Michael,

The little girl Paola and her mother Rosa want to tell you that they were very happy for your visit and they thank you very much for the attention for Paola and for visiting her. Rosa says that Paola loved how you took them to the zoo and they loved it. They also thank you for your kindness and courtesy for them on your visit. They say God bless you and may He pay you for everything you have done for Paola. Thank you for everything.

Although I loved zoos as a kid, I'm not so fond of them now that I'm involved with animal activism. Still, I can't resist the lure of taking a wide-eyed child to see the animals live and up close. Zoos like the one in Guadalajara (which was no way near as bad as the one I used to visit in Pakistan) are especially bittersweet, because they have less money for good habitats, but that must be weighed against the fact that the kids of that country have so much less opportunity than others to view and learn about wildlife. Ideally, children ought to be taken on safari to see live, wild animals in their natural environment ... but kids like Paola will probably NEVER have such an opportunity. She may not even get to watch Animal Planet on Mexican TV.

Rosa confirmed that Paola had never seen live animals before (other than the domestic ones at her house). She seemed as excited as any 4-year-old would be, but I couldn't tell if she was MORE excited than normal since kids her age maintain a fairly high level of enthusiasm just as a general rule.

After entering the zoo, the first thing we saw was a hippopotamus ... a plastic, ride-able one, perfect for a photo op. The hippo was hotter than Hades, so I stretched my legs out for the girls to straddle so they wouldn't get burned.

Next, we saw flamingos, the REAL hippos, the restroom, a monkey island, and the kangaroo pen. That's it, animal-wise, which leaves plenty of the zoo left for Paola to see when the next sponsor visits her!

July Visit, Part 14 - Off to the Zoo!

As we were wrapping up our home visit and preparing to head for the zoo, Mike and I received some startling news: Rosa told Marcela that she needed to be back home by 2pm! It was already 11am, and it would take nearly an hour to get to Zoologica Guadalahara, so we hurried everyone into the truck.

Since the three English-speaking CI reps were riding in the bed of the truck, Mike and I were on our own when it came to communication during the long drive. Mike sat in the front next to Fernando, and I was in the short back seat next to Rosa, Maria, Tomasa, and their 14-year-old cousin, who was also coming along with us. Paola sat on my lap.

We dropped Alfredo back at the community center, then sped off to the zoo. On the way in, I had asked Marcela if she wasn't getting tired of seeing the zoo, as that was probably where most sponsors wanted to take their kids. She told me that she had only been on two zoo trips before ours - one accompanied by Paola's 13th sponsor, Barbara, who she remembered well and spoke highly of.

When we arrived at the park, I read the signs and learned that there were several different attraction packages available. The tickets we had purchased at the previous day's expo were for a combination of the zoo + the aquarium - but did not include the safari ride, which disappointed me. However, considering we would have only slightly over an hour to tour the place, not going on the safari was okay.

At the gate, I was three adult tickets short, as I had not been expecting Elsa, Fernando, or Akela. I didn't mind paying for everyone, except it was a shame that we would be inside the zoo for such a short time on our full-price tickets!

July Visit, Part 13 - Delivering the Gifts

After meeting Paola's family and touring the home, I needed to change the batteries in my camera. I told Mike it would probably be a good time to unload the gifts from the truck while I was busy, so he summoned the staff and they started carrying bags of stuff up to the house. Soon, Marcela found me inside the truck rummaging through my pack for fresh batteries and urged me to come with her. She said that the family wanted me to give a speech along with the presentation of the gifts. Yikes!

Put on the spot, I stood there before the assembly and babbled in horrific, broken Spanish, trying my best to give credit to our entire sponsor group for the purchase of the items, and to stress the idea that if there was anything else the family needed, I was ready to take requests. I don't know if anyone understood a word of my speech (next time I will have one prepared, just in case. No, I will take Heather along with me!), but they all applauded politely at the end ... and then they all looked to Mike. My husband performed eloquently, having the good sense to express his feelings in English and allow the CI staff to translate afterward!

The family seemed grateful and delighted over the gifts. The kids were eager to help carry everything into the house, and they came back out munching on the onion ring chips I'd bought for them.

Jumping to the Point! What Can We Do For Paola?

Since I'm so slow about making these blog posts, I guess I'll skip straight to the important stuff - ideas on how our group can help Paola and her family:

I asked, of course, what they needed most, but didn't really get an answer. So, here are my thoughts ....

STARTING POINT:

I would first recommend that we do a simple $125 fundraiser and designate that the money be spent on (at least) 2 sets of drawers. Right now, the family's clothes, etc. are piled in heaps along the walls. Once cleared of clutter, these spaces could be occupied by dressers or other better forms of storage.

Also, I believe that Paola's 6-year-old sis, Tomasa, is still in need of a sponsor. Marcela thought so, but wasn't entirely sure. She said she'd let me know (but not HOW she would let me know!), but no word yet. I looked, and did not see Tomasa 'advertised' on CI's site - but that does not necessarily mean she's been sponsored. A call could be made to CI to find out for sure.

I'd hate to see Tomasa not getting the same medical care, schooling, and other advantages that her sister enjoys. We should be on the look-out for a sponsor; ideally one not already in our group so we can get some new blood (and by that I mean "money") onboard.

THE HOUSE:

By local standards, I'd say Paola's house is quite adequate. It's made of bricks, dry, and sturdier than most I've seen when traveling. Maybe something could be done about the flies buzzing around? My only worry would be the health risk to the children if any sort of pesticides were used. Also, the interior is dark. A project to install light fixtures is a possibility (which would attract more bugs!), or the same effect might be accomplished by adding a plug-in lamp to the dresser request.

One issue with the house (as explained by an uncle, or someone like that) is how their courtyard area floods whenever it rains. I asked Marcela, "What can be done about this?" and she replied, "Oh, nothing can be done." I don't think that's true ... ditches, drains, sandbags, SOMETHING ought to fix the problem! We could ask for a field worker to do an assessment; I think things like home repairs just aren't Marcela's area of expertise.

Installing indoor plumbing is a possible - but expensive - project.

AN IGP:

I don't think we would get anywhere with this idea. I learned that Rosa's job is making bricks with the other adult members of the family 6 days a week. Since they all live together as a community, I imagine her reported income is simply a "guesstimate" of her family's share of the profits.

I asked if there was a way to help the family's brick-making trade be more profitable, but Marcela said, "Not really." Making bricks is making bricks, and there isn't any equipment to help things along.

Even if we could think of a career path that would generate more money for Rosa, I doubt that she would be interested. Her family would be reluctant to lose her, I'm thinking, and she probably wouldn't want to leave them short-handed of brick makers. Also, since the brick business is located just across the dirt road from their house, Rosa does not need to worry about childcare. I suppose the kids just play in the brick dust all day (until they reach school age?)

There were a number of animals roaming around the compound - were they pets, or just "there"? The first dog pictured was chained to his makeshift doghouse, so he obviously wasn't a stray that simply wandered in. The white puppy was a favorite of Mike's and mine, so we asked the dog's name. We were told that he didn't have one.

There was a skinny horse staked out behind Paola's house, but as much as I would have liked to ride it (lol), I did not ask who the animal belonged to.

As I mentioned earlier, Paola lives alongside a large number of extended family members, many of them other children. All of the other kids hanging around were dirty, too, with one exception. 14-year-old Akela was nicely dressed and well groomed, probably because she is old enough to care about her personal appearance and to do something about it herself.

I wish there had been time to be introduced to each person in attendance, and to find out how everybody was related (or not) to Paola. It's possible that some of the people pictured are merely friends and neighbors, but they all acted as though they "belonged".

Mack's Regret #3 - I wish I'd anticipated how many random children would be running around, and had thought to bring some sort of treat to pass out to everybody. I did that in Honduras, so I should have remembered and been prepared to do it again.

I suggested to Marcela that next time we could make plans to take ALL the kids to the zoo, but she got a pained look on her face and shook her head.

Paola apparently lives in Casa Numero Ocho, which acts as somewhat of a commune. The small block of connected abodes is occupied by various members of Paola's extended family. The allotment of space for Rosa and her children seems to be an entry way, which also serves as the kitchen, and a single bedroom. I wasn't shown any of the rest of the house(s).

I imagine that all four of them sleep on the one bed, which is workable for right now while the girls are very small. I wonder what will happen when they start to outgrow the single bed? (which, from what I could tell, was a box spring and mattress held up by overturned buckets. The bedding seemed as clean as it could be in a room with a dirt-covered floor. I couldn't tell the size of the bed for purchasing sheets, but perhaps someone else can eyeball it?)

The sink-like thing in the bottom picture seems to be where the family washes. It didn't have any sort of spigot, so I think they fill it manually by drawing water from their well.

I keep saying "seems like" and "I think" because I didn't ask an abundance of questions. First, because the few questions I DID ask weren't really answered, and secondly, because nobody was expecting the Spanish Inquisition. I asked Marcela to explain to the family that I didn't mean to be rude by poking around and taking pictures of everything - I just wanted to show Paola's other sponsors what improvements were needed for the home.

Mack's Regret #2: I wish I'd used my GPS to mark the latitude and longitude of Paola's house so that we could look at it on GoogleEarth. But if anyone from CI noticed me doing that, they would probably freak out, thinking I planned to return and see her without a chaperone.

I thought we might meet Paola first at the community center, as that is how it been done in Honduras. Instead, we were joined by another CI rep, Alfredo, who directed Fernando (our driver) to Paola's residence. When we pulled up, I expected to find everybody ready and waiting - with the kids scrubbed, polished, and dressed up in their best clothes for our day out. Not the case. The only people home when we arrived was an older gentleman (whose relationship was never explained) and a small child sitting in a wheelbarrow. Rosa, the mother, wandered up from somewhere behind us ... but where was Paola? Nobody knew. Everyone began circling the area calling the little girl's name, and eventually she came scampering over from who knows where.

Paola behaved exactly the way I would expect from a 4-year-old girl bombarded by strangers and gifts. She was sweet, but a little shy at first - dividing her time between satisfying her curiosity and burying her face against Mama's leg. Once she'd recovered from her initial bewilderment, Paola quickly warmed to being the center of attention and the primary subject of 10, 000 photos.

I was startled to find our little Paola and her sisters in such filthy condition! On the one hand, it's good to be aware of what must be their "usual" level of hygiene, but I'm shocked that Rosa didn't bother to clean up her brood in anticipation of our visit. The girls had a week's worth of dirt build-up on their faces and hands, and their hair was stiff and matted, like it hadn't been washed in a long time. Zoom in on any of the photographs, and you will see the dirt and grime covering the girls' clothing. On a brighter note, none of the kids smelled like dried urine, as I've encountered in other poverty situations.

We had brought diaper wipes for the family, so I could have easily cleaned the children's faces off ... but I didn't think that would be polite. Don't believe for a second that I'm bothered by filthy children, or that I was reluctant to hug the girls for free of getting my own clothes messy. I really don't care. I would have happily collected just as much dirt under my fingernails as a kid, if I didn't have parents dunking me in a bathtub every time I turned around. And I don't necessarily blame Rosa for not keeping her kids clean. I don't have kids of my own for various reasons (mostly involving laziness and selfishness), not the least of which is avoiding the responsibility of keeping them filth free - even with my advantage of indoor plumbing. It must be very hard to keep kids, clothes, etc clean in an environment like Rosa's. Still ... none of the equally poor children that I observed at the community center were dirty, so the other local mothers are managing.

It's important to note that aside from the hygiene thing, Rosa gave every sign of being an excellent mother. She was very affectionate with her girls, and delighted in watching them have fun at the zoo. She was always smiling and cheerful, and I think her happiest moment was when I gave her a copy of Paola's CI photo. She obviously loves her daughters very much!

Paola's community center is truly spectacular! In addition to a doctor, dentist, library, etc. CI also provides the little ones with a psychologist, which goes above and beyond what can reasonably be expected for a mere $22 per month. I was especially impressed by the well-equipped computer lab, where kids can learn the technical skills they'll need to succeed in our modern world.

The community center is best seen in the video tour series I recorded (once I figure out how to upload those ... looks like I just need to click the filmstrip icon. I'll try it in a minute).

When visualizing this visit, I made a lot of assumptions based on my trip to Honduras in February. One of these was that CI Mexico would have a van similar to the one used by the office in San Pedro Sula. On Monday morning, it suddenly occurred to me that these subconscious assumptions of mine could be wrong! Quickly, I called Marcela (my contact) to make sure she would be picking us up in a vehicle large enough to carry all of our gifts for Paola's family. Marcela assured me that they would be arriving in a truck, but not until 9:30, because it was a 45 minute drive to our hotel from their main office.

This news destroyed another of my assumptions: the one where I'd figured that I could do more shopping on Tuesday, then drop the goods at Marcela's office for delivery to Paola at a future date. I was able to do this in San Pedro Sula, because the main office was conveniently located 10 minutes from where we were staying.

Marcela and crew arrived promptly at 9:30 to pick us up. She introduced us to Fernando, the driver, and Elsa, a second translator. Just to give you an idea of what the day was like for these poor CI reps, here is a break down of our travels over the course of the day:

1. Marcela, Elsa, and Fernando pick us up (from our hotel near the zoo) - 45 minutes

2. We drive to Paola's community center - 30 minutes

3. We drive to Paola's house - 10 minutes

4. We drive back to the community center - 10 minutes

5. We drive to the zoo - 40 minutes

6. We drive back to Paola's house - 45 minutes or so

7. We drive back to our hotel (near the zoo, remember?) - 35 minutes

8. The CI staff drive back to the main office - 45 minutes

The gas we used probably could've sponsored another kid for 3 months!

Mack's Regret #1:

On my first child visit, I made the mistake of basically ignoring the CI staff and focusing entirely on the kids. This time, I spent more time talking to them and asking questions about their jobs (we spent a lot of time in the car together, after all). What I wish is that I had asked them all to pose together for a photo that I could show you. I meant to stage a group picture on several occasions, but the CI reps always stepped back automatically so it would just be me, Mike, and Paola's family. I never insisted that they join us in the photo.

I wasn't willing to take out a second mortgage on my house to give a kid a doll that looked nothing like her and her family! Another thing for the mail, I guess.

We took a long nap, and after we got up Mike wanted to shower, shave, fix his hair, and apply sunblock – a process that takes well over an hour. I showered quickly (like a normal person), then headed for Wal-Mart with a little notebook and a pen. I wanted to write down the prices of their merchandise so I could compare them to what we found during our adventures in the city.

The cost of goods at Wal-Mart was insane!!! I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry. Most things were priced equally to U.S. stuff, or else way, waayyy higher. Toys were the worst. They seemed to stock very little that had been manufactured in Mexico, so perhaps shipping and tariffs drove the prices up? In any case, a doll or a plastic truck that would cost $10 back home sold for around $30 at the Guadalajara Wal-Mart!

As I meandered through the aisles, I took special note of items that had “sale” price tags, and the discounted stuff displayed on the end caps. There were some specials that looked pretty good – large, fluffy pillows for $3 each, a full set of silverware on sale for $16, etc. – the trouble was that these bargains were so few and far between, and the affordable deals hardly covered everything I had planned to buy. Simple items like toothpaste/brushes and dish soap were outrageously expensive!

While I walked back to our hotel, I pondered what to do. Obviously, Wal-Mart is not the place where the average Mexican family shops … but where could I find a “regular” marketplace? I only had one shopping day, and it just happened to be a SUNDAY, when 2/3 of stores were closed. Even if I could figure out a decent place to buy things for Paola’s household, how would I get the stuff back to our hotel? The nice thing about Wal-Mart was how it was so convenient and close!

A little dejected, I set out with Mike on a walk to the Cathedral downtown. I kept my eye out for open stores along the way, but this was the tourist district, so everything was priced at ‘gringo level’. The one small toy store we ducked into sold only the Armani version of stuffed animals.
Once at the Cathedral, our primary mission was to find a crucifix and chain for Barbara’s sponsored child, Miguel, who will take his first communion this year. Did I mention how I hate to shop? After perusing a half dozen basically identical religious jewelry stores, we finally made the purchase.

Next, we wandered through the aisles of a travel expo set up in the plaza behind the Cathedral. There was a booth sponsored by Zoologico de Guadalajara, where we were able to get discounted tickets for our excursion the next day. We didn’t know how many people we’d be taking with us to the zoo, so we guessed (badly) at 4 adults and 2 children.

On the way back to our hotel, I wanted to stop at a little department/grocery store I’d seen, called Waldo’s. Wow! They had lots of great household stuff, and it was all affordably priced! Between things for Paola and some more for Heather’s child, Brayan, Mike and I filled up three (small) carts full of goods. I was very grateful to be armed with my Wal-Mart pricing notebook, because with it I could easily compare and see which store had the best deal on certain items. Generally, Waldo’s won out, but Wal-Mart had sweet sales on bar soap, rice, and a few other essentials.

A store employee helped us push our purchases to the nearest taxi stand, where we hired a ride back to our hotel. As we drove past Wal-Mart, I stuck my naughty finger out the window, which made our taxi driver laugh out loud.

The hotel owner was startled to see us unload so many things into his lobby. He probably thought we were moving in permanently. The man was even MORE shocked when we returned from Wal-Mart an hour later with ANOTHER overflowing cart full of merchandise!

After our shopping expedition, Mike showered again, while I separated, catalogued, and photographed all of our purchases. I was pretty proud of how well I’d done for a sworn anti-shopper. The one thing that I avoided buying was clothing for the girls. I hadn’t seen the kids yet, plus I suck at guessing garment sizes … not to mention how expensive the clothes were at Wal-Mart. I’ll clothing shop here at home, and mail Paola and her sisters a nice, big box.

Despite our earlier nap, Mike and I were pretty tired. We ate our dinner of bread from the Wal-Mart bakery (day-old; 1 peso per loaf), then crashed into bed.

July Visit, Part 2 – Getting to Guadalajara

The last time my airline pilot friend offered me use of his travel passes was in 2004. That time, my mother and I were able to fly round-trip to Tokyo with no issues. We went First Class, and paid only around $50 each in taxes and fees.

Wednesday of last week, my friend told me he had some extra passes that were expiring soon. I asked him about possible travel to Guadalajara, and he quickly looked up the flights and told me that the trip should work out fine. He was a little busy that night, taking care of his kids while his wife prepared to check into the hospital for a mastectomy the next day, so he didn’t look as closely as he could have.

On Thursday morning, I contacted Greg to make last minute plans for visiting Paola. Things worked out great on his end – the Jalisco reps were able to talk to Paola’s mother that same day and make arrangements for Monday … except I still didn’t have any actual plane reservations.

My pilot friend was really, really busy, so he gave me his employee log-in info so I could book the flights myself. I called him back in a panic to tell him that the flight he wanted me to take was already overbooked by 30+ seats! “That’s no problem,” he told me. “They oversell like that based on the number of passengers who haven’t shown up in the past. It’s a scientifically calculated risk. You’ll be the only two people on the stand-by list. Since no space has been sold yet in First Class, and the typical traveler who flies to Guadalajara at one in the morning won’t be able to afford the upgrade fee, you’ll be sitting there.”

I dubiously proceeded to plan my itinerary, then immediately called my friend back. “Um, there are already 14 people on the stand-by list for our flight back home … is that okay?”

“No, you’ll never get on that plane,” I was told. “What does the next day look like?”

The situation was not optimistic.

“There’s no point in going if you can’t get home,” he said. “You’d better plan for a different destination.”

“I can’t,” I replied. “There’s a little girl counting on a trip to the zoo.”

My husband HAD to be back for work on Friday, so I heaved a sigh and bought him a ticket to LAX on Mexicana Airlines. I used more of my precious frequent flyer miles to get Mike home from California. As for me, I would have to sit in Guadalajara until space was available on a flight back to the U.S., or until I died of old age, whichever came first.

Next, I found out that fees have gone way up for international travelers using “free” passes. Suddenly, my complimentary trip came with a price tag of nearly $300! That’s still cheap for roundtrip transport to Mexico, but the expense was unexpected (especially considering how we also had to pay for Mike’s ticket + one leg of not-so-free travel). “I had no idea the fees would be so high,” my friend said. “Do you want to cancel the trip NOW?”

“Nope, I still can’t,” I told him sadly. Jalisco Children International was closed for the weekend by this time, so the only way to inform the family of our cancellation would be for a rep to show up at Paola’s house on Monday morning - after the kids were already scrubbed and ready to leave for what was possibly the biggest event of their lives thus far. Not possible!

So … Mike and I arrived at LAX in the middle of the night, all dressed up to sleep on the plane. Again, my friend was wrong about everything! Almost all the ticketed passengers showed up for the flight, which meant that Delta had no choice but to fill up the First Class section with the overflow from Coach. And they weren’t exactly selective about who they upgraded. I looked down at the world’s ugliest dress shoes that I’d bought just so I’d be eligible to sit in First Class, and I really, really wanted my $11 back!

Mike and I barely made it onto the plane, and I think we only got seats because of Delta’s policy that English speakers must sit in the exit rows. I didn’t care one bit about having to fly Coach – my only wish was for a set of comfortable clothes!

The flight was just 4 hours long, which was barely time for a decent nap. Immigration/Customs in Guadalajara was as crowded as an open audition for American Idol. It was the most disorganized entry I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve entered A LOT of countries!

There are three main ways of getting from the airport to Guadalajara City: a taxi for 210 pesos, a nice bus for 10 pesos, and a bumpier bus for 5 pesos. Under normal circumstances, I would take the cheapest option … but we were excessively tired + we didn’t know where the bus would let us off in relation to our hotel. We splurged for a taxi.

We really lucked out with the hotel that I’d blindly selected. With no time to research neighborhoods, I based my decision purely on price – Hotel La Calandria cost only $13 a night for a double room w/private bath. The place was great! The room was simple, of course, but perfectly functional. The hotel was secure, and the owner was friendly and helpful. Best of all, our location was awesome! We were within walking distance of the Cathedral & tourist district … buses to/from the airport left from across the street next to the 24hr convenience store … the nearest MegaBus stop was only a couple blocks away … on the corner right next to Wal-Mart!!!

At around 9am, we collapsed into bed for a much needed nap.

Btw, this was not my first trip to Guadalajara … but things have changed a little since 1976.

I went to bed at midnight on Friday, but I got up again at 3am to finish packing. When our plane took off at 7:30am, I was understandably exhausted! Lucky for me, one of the flight attendants held a trivia contest, and I was able to win a $6 can of Red Bull for knowing Winnie-the-Pooh’s real name. It turns out that I don’t much like Red Bull. It must have been my first time drinking the stuff, because I’m sure the nasty taste would have stuck in my memory if I’d ever had it before. Mike was a gentleman and finished the can for me after I choked down a few disgusting swallows – enough, I hoped, to get me through a day of driving in California traffic.

Mike and I flew to L.A. using Frequent Flyer Miles, because LAX was the launching point for our “free” Delta employee passes. We arrived in the city at around 9:30am, and our flight to Guadalajara didn’t take off until 1am the next day. What would we do for the next 14 hours?
The obvious answer would be to visit Mike’s parents and brother, who live in nearby Hollywood. Yeah, right. My in-laws FREAK OUT if they are not given 6 months advance notice of a home invasion. They also TOTALLY FREAK OUT when I take their son with me to third world countries. After the Great Moroccan Panic Attack, we’ve learned not to even mention things like our backpacking jaunt through Southeast Asia … or our 2007 trip to Central America … or the fact that Mike has a driver’s license (against their will) and owns a vehicle (of sorts).

The next obvious plan was to rent a car and drive the 1.25 hours to my grandmother’s place, as she adapts more readily to surprise visits. So, that’s what we did. There was no hurry as we headed in the direction of Loma Linda, CA, because it was the Sabbath and Grandma would still be at church. Mike and I decided to kill time by doing some worshiping of our own . . . at Church’s Chicken. Dang, I wish we had that restaurant chain at home – their food is super cheap, and the biscuits have honey baked right into ‘em!

I wasn’t sure what time Grandma would be home, but I decided to go straight to the house of her adopted family, as I assumed everyone would gather there for lunch anyway. It was a good move, because the family had slept in and missed church. They were ecstatic at our unexpected arrival – even when caught still wearing pajamas - which again confirms my belief that it’s best to choose your own family members instead of sticking with only the ones you are granted at birth.

Grandma and her sister (my great-aunt) arrived soon, and were delighted by our surprise visit. The kids performed a concert for us on the cello and violin, then they wanted me to take them geocaching. We geocached all afternoon, with breaks in between for me to run necessary errands. The first side trip took me to Kinko’s, where I printed out copies of our Delta flight itineraries. The warnings on the pages made it clear that while we were flying as “guests” of the airline, we were expected to represent the very best of the Delta family. Since people on passes often fly First Class (because those are the seats least likely to be sold), we were required to dress nicely or risk being refused entry on the plane. I heaved a sigh as I stopped at Wal-Mart to buy a pair of uncomfortable formal shoes, just in case my dirty sandals didn’t pass inspection.

In the evening, Grandma took everybody out to eat at (I kid you not) the Happy Family Vegetarian Restaurant. After sampling the meatless shrimp, I don’t think our family was quite as happy as the name of the place might imply. We finished our meal, handed out hugs, and hurried back to the airport to ensure that we’d be ready and waiting to board our plane … if there was any extra space for us.

The waiting for Paola's photos and video is intense here! I so wish I could have gone and hope to visit her someday. According to Mack's short note it sounds as though we all came in at the right time to help this little girl and her family. Its amazing what 13 people can do in such short notice. I'm sure the family was overwhelmed for Mack's visit and the gifts she brought. Paola will have happier thoughts knowing she is loved and cared for. I think Mack's visit was perfect timing!

Ok, everyone... Mack had to rush away to get to Mexico this morning, so I will update you on the situation. Everyone who sent me paragraphs to send to Paola are getting their message hand delivered by Mack. Last night, Efrain stepped up to do the translations (since I was bombarded with work all day). After Efrain tweeked the letters, he sent them to me. I added my own paragraph as well. For some reason, I am not able to cut & paste the letter into this blog from my work computer, so I will have to post that later. Anyway, Mack got the mini-letters and printed them on nice paper to deliver to Paola.

Also, we raised $120 + for Paola, so Mack will pick up some things for her and her family when she gets to Mexico. If you still want to donate, there is still time. Just send a paypal payment to my account, and I am forwarding the money on to Mack.

We will have pictures & video next week!!!! WOW!!!

I'm packing my bag in preparation for departure in 20 minutes. The three teddies for the girls + Stanley BeanBottom, the world traveling monkey, take up about 65% of my luggage space.

Should I leave behind my clothes or my toiletries? Which is worse: smelling bad or getting a full body sunburn?

NEVERMIND, I don't think this is going to happen in time. I only have one day before I leave + a million things to do. Also, I'm sure Heather doesn't have time for the translations. We will have to fall back on the former plan for writing a letter. I will tell Paola that greetings from everyone are on the way.

For those of you who would like to introduce yourself to Paola, here's what to do:

1. Pick out a photo. Title it with your name, please. (as in mack.jpg)

2. Write a short note about yourself (short enough to fit when pasted onto the back of a 4X6 picture). Be sure to include your name at the end.

3. Email these to me, so I can get them printed and laminated.

4. Do it fast, because I leave early Saturday morning (really early)/

If you do not speak Spanish, send your message to Heather for translation and she will pass them on to me. You can get our email addresses from the group mail sent out earlier ... I hope. I don't know if I ought to post them directly on this blog. Is this private? Help, Su!!!

We can't have a blog about a kid, but only 1 picture of her. Not cool.

Therefore, I volunteer to go to Mexico and get us some more. This morning, I called Greg from sponsor services and arranged to visit Paola and her family this coming Monday. (I have learned that Paola's mother works Tuesday - Saturday)(on Monday, I will find out exactly what she does on Tuesday - Saturday)

The plan is for my husband and I to visit Paola's home, then take her, her mother, and her sisters to the Guadalajara Zoo and the amusement park - Selva Magica - that is located next door. I also hope to tour her community center.

We fly back to the States on Tuesday.

We will not be taking any checked luggage, so I will be limited to small gifts from the United States. When I arrive in Mexico on Sunday, I will do some clothes and food shopping for the family. Perhaps buy some dishes, or something like that? I will have to see what is available in the marketplace.

Today, I was at a medical supply store, so I bought a digital thermometer with instructions in Spanish. We want Paola's mom to know if she has a fever! I also have a small stuffed bear (super soft, from Brookstone) for each of the 3 girls.

Why such an impromptu trip? Well ...

My best friend married an airline pilot. He called last night to say that he had a stack of unused free passes that will expire on 7/16. "Can you go somewhere on short notice?" He asked me. Of course, I can! I immediately thought of Paola, and, fortunately, it looks as though the flights to Guadalajara are not booked up, so my husband and I should be able to get on flying stand-by (hence, no luggage).

Hello Everyone,

I would like to introduce myself.

I used my picture from school since I am usually on the picture taking side of the camera. I am 46 years old and live in the Middle Atlantic portion of the United States. I currently have two jobs, my first and true love is teaching. Currently I teach fourth grade at a local Catholic School. At my second job I work as a customer service representative for Lenox Corporation.

I have been sponsoring children through CI for the past 20 or so years. My first sponsored child was from Columbia, she left the program after three years because her parents found a better job in an area outside of the CI service area. I still remember that her favorite thing was to see the street sweeper come through her neighborhood. That sticks with me because I like to watch that truck come through my neighborhood as well.

Presently I sponsor four girls (including Paola). My other three girls are all from Ecuador. First there is Josselyn, she is 10 years old and we have the same birthday. Next there is Jenniffer, she is 11 years old and her birthday is in May. My third child is Ashley, she is 10 years old and her birthday is in November.

I am blessed to be part of two GREAT groups so passionate about sponsorship, the CI newsgroup and this group.
